Additives For Water Borne Coatings.
Objectives of Study.
The objectives of this investigation are to provide clients with an understanding of the specific chemical functional additives utilized in the formulation of water borne coatings in the Unites States.

Each of the functional additives has been identified as to the specific chemicals used, their consumption, average price per pound in 1993 and supplier market shares. Projected consumption estimated for 1998 are given based on technology trends and on Environmental Protection Agency (USA EPA) actions.
Study Methodology.
To gather all of the information and data used to prepare this study, direct calls were made with 100 persons at 65 locations of 45 companies.
Scope of Study.
The scope of this study includes the investigation of chemical additives used in the formulation of coatings that are now or will be substantially water borne over the next five years.

Water borne coating applications selected for investigation are as follows:

  • Architectural or Trade Sales Coatings
  • Automotive OEM-Electrodeposition Coatings
    • Base (Color) Coatings
  • Containers-Interior Food Can Coatings
    • Interior Clear Beer & Soda Can Coatings
    • Exterior Pigment Base Beer Can Coatings
    • Exterior Clear Base Beer & Soda Can Coatings
    • Exterior Clear Overvarnish Beer & Soda Can Coatings
  • Coil-Primer and Color Coatings
  • Wood-Interior Color & Top Coatings
    • Building Products, Kitchen Cabinets, Office Furniture
    • Exterior Primers & Top Coats
    • Building Products Flat Stock Hard Board Siding Factory Applied
  • Traffic Marking
Those chemical functional additives identified and discussed include:
  • Acid Catalysts
  • Adhesion Promoters
  • Anticratering/Leveling Agents
  • Antifoams/Defoamers
  • Associative Thickeners
  • Biocides
  • Coalescents
  • Corrosion Inhibitors
  • Crosslinking Agents
  • Dispersants
  • Fungicides
  • Heat Stabilizers
  • Light Stabilizers
  • Reactive Diluents
  • Mar Proof Agents/Lubricants/Waxes
  • Rheology Modifiers
  • Surfactants/Wetting Agents
  • Thickeners
For purposes of this investigation, water borne coatings are described as coatings that use primarily water as diluent, carrier or solvent rather than a petroleum base organic compound such as a solvent. The categories of water borne coatings include suspensions or solutions, emulsions and water reducible resin systems.
