Additives For Synthetic Fiber Production.
Objectives of Study.
The objectives of this marketing-technical study are to identify he specific chemical additives used in the production of synthetic fibers by type and form including;
  • The chemical additives used internally.
  • The chemical additives used as constituents in the formulation of spin finishes.
  • The chemical additives used, topically, to modify the performance of the synthetic fiber.
The study determined specific chemical additive;
  • Consumption, in pounds and current dollars, 1988 through 1992.
  • Prices/pound and activity levels.
  • Function and performance characteristics by fiber form.
  • Suppliers and their market shares.
  • Need for improved additive properties.
Scope of Study.
The scope of this study included those specific internal and external additives used for the U.S. production of filament, textured, bulk continuous and staple fiber;

  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Polypropylene
  • Acetate/Triacetate
  • Rayon
  • Glass
Identified additive functions included;

Internal Additives

  • Ester Interchange Catalysts
  • Polymerization Catalysts

Spin Finish Additives
  • Lubricants
  • Emulsifiers
  • Antistats
  • Wetting Agents
Topical Additives
  • Stain Blockers
  • Biocides
  • Soil Repellents (Fluorochemical)
Study Methodology.
To gather all of the specific information needed to prepare this marketing-technical study, personal field calls were made to 70 individuals at 55 locations of 45 organizations. Interviews were held with both technical and purchasing personnel of fiber producers, spin finish formulators, chemical producers and suppliers, trade associations and equipment manufacturers.
